Dial "1" First

Is there anyone out there that doesn't realize you have to dial "1" as the prefact to toll-free number? Apparently, from my phone ringing off the hook this morning, there are quite a few people in this categorey. It seems some bank changed their service number to a toll free call that starts with the same seven digits (866-XXXX) that make up the beginning of my phone number. I've received at least 30 calls, starting at about 6 a.m. Amazing...

Sure, I can believe it.

People used to write to actor Raymond Burr for legal advice because Burr used to play attorney Perry Mason on TV.

People also used to write to actor Robert Young because Young used to play Marcus Welby, MD on TV.

In my teaching, I tell my students to follow the the writing models that I supply, but I regularly have students who submit writings without ever looking at the models.

I submit that there are broad groups of people out there who are in stages of evolution that prevent them from functioning at the level that the rest of society might expect.

It's just the way it is...

Yes, and this explains fax machines as well... but actually, I'd like to tip my hat to National County Bank - who I've never heard of, but was apparently the culprit in this case. They actually just called me (using the cell phone number that is on the Voicemail for my now unconnected business phone)and apologized for my inconvenience. They have asked Verizon to change their message to include a "1" and said they will call me back after Verizon institutes the change. I have to commend them on their human decency. Thanks guys.

Yes, and big kudos to National County for the way they handled it. They told me Verizon told them they could not inlcude the "1" in their automated message and that they assume people would realize they had to dial it. National County, after learning of my messy situation realized this was certainly not the case, so they told me they cancelled the number and even took my address and will be sending me a gift for my grief. I received a handful of calls for whatever reason today, but have turned my phone back on and it seems to be business as usual.

Cheers.
