Belichick's Decision

Here's a great Joe Posnanski post that explains why Belichick went for it on fourth down with 2 minutes left Sunday night. By Joe's math, which is backed up by the math of some Air Force pilot, the odds were clearly in the Patriots favor...

I know Belichick was taking lots of heat for this, but I know exactly why he did this and I don't blame him.

How many times have you seen Manning take the ball the length of the field to win a game in the final moments? Dozens.

How many times had he done it that particular game? Twice, I think (I didn't see the entire game; could have been more).

Belichick figured that if he gave Manning the ball with two minutes left, the Pats would lose. I think he was right. The Pats couldn't have punted the ball far enough to keep Peyton out of the end zone.

Besides, if the Pats D had stopped Peyton prior to this call, they wouldn't have been in that position.

Basically, I don't think that teams go for it enough on 4th down, so I like to see it from time to time. Take guts...and Belichick wins more than he loses, that's for sure.

I agree with you entirely. It wasn't Belichick that lost the game, it was Kevin Faulk, who didn't make a clean catch on the fourth down play....Over the years, as a Bills fan, I've learned not to disagree with Belichick's football decisions.

Gregg Easterbrook in Tuesday Morning Quarterback: "A core reason coaches order short-yardage punts is that if a fourth-down try fails, they will be criticized -- whereas, if the ball is punted and then the defense surrenders a score, players get the criticism." - Good call
